I've written before that inmates can't vote here at Bastrop Federal Satellite Camp. However, that doesn't keep us from having opinions and discussions that are frequently passionate and occasionally intelligent. It's far better than Meet the Depressed on Sunday morning TV. So...here's an opinion.

During the last 8 years of Barack Obama's presidency, the democrats have lost 900 state legislative seats, 11 governorships, 69 US House of Representative seats, and 13 Senate seats. They have no farm system, and it's a party completely bereft of young talent. Had it any, he/she could waltz into being the party's nominee for our nation's highest office as Obama did in 2008. Nobody wants Hillary, and Bernie is your crazy uncle who taught philosophy at a Junior College before being laid off. I bet he has 4 pairs of Earth Shoes.

The republican leadership is so dysfunctional; it is incapable of even suggesting a presidential nominee whom anyone can stomach. The party's leadership has abdicated its usual job to primary voters who apparently are even more clueless than anyone could have imagined.

When I was a growing up in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, politics was our best and cheapest form of entertainment. A big star on a small stage was a man named L.D. Knox. In every election cycle, L.D. would run for something. He never spent much on his campaign, but he was tenacious. Was he a little weird? Probably. But we were all a little weird and forgiving. Back then everybody knew everybody. When L.D raked muck about the other candidates, we just smiled and said, "Bless his heart," so he never received more than a few hundred votes.

It came as a surprise to us though, when late in his political career, L.D. became very politically creative. He legally changed his name to None Of The Above. None Of The Above, and not L.D. Knox, actually appeared on the ballot. But alas, since everybody knew everybody, it didn't make much difference.

But now times are different. Even with 24/7 news, everybody knows nobody. It's a political environment where L.D. Knox, or a real estate developer from NYC, running as None Of The Above, can rake some muck and aim for the White House. Bless his heart.

The summer and fall of 2016 should prove to be politically very interesting. As we all know, timing..................is...everything.
